When filming, I got the opportunity to use one of my friend's drone. This was exciting as it gave completely new angle scenes and very original shots. In many social realism trailers, there is a clear establishing shot of the setting, and this was quite difficult for us to have done before having the drone.
It was very interesting to learn about the drone, and the GPS qualities. I had to be aware that even though we could go higher, we had to keep to a limit of 3K in height, as this is the law on drones, emphasisng the control needed when filming with them. On top of this, I had to be aware of the limitations and cons of drones, for example privacy issues, which are depicted in this article by the Daily Telegraph:
It has very complicated controls that where hard to pick up, but my friend was able to film it coming closer to me as the protagonist in a very effective way. There were also two options on the camera, either a wider angle with slightly less quality footage, or a small angle with better quality - i chose the better quality option, as i was aware the camera quality would be worse than our other footage anyway.
Editing was essential after filming with the drone. The footage, despite looking original, was very slow, and therefore needed to be sped up for our trailer, and we had to carefully select the bits that we would use, as we only have space for a few seconds of the drone. To get a smoother and more secure shot, the camera filmed upside down, so we had to edit it by rotating it.
Moreover, when the camera was positioned, it had to face slightly towards the ground so it was looking at the ground not the earth, and therefore the difference in angles was minimal, however the shots where diverse with zooms and panning. Plus, the high angle position works for us, as it makes our protagonist seem weaker.
Here is some of the drone footage:
