I decided to have a look at some film websites, to got an idea for my Promotional Package. Here are the codes, conventions, strengths and weaknesses of 3 film websites.
Avatar
This website shows the title of the film, access to the trailer, free downloads and a gallery which are all codes and conventions of a website. The things it does well are its news feed, which shoes any progress since the film was released, and the rollover of stills from the film is really effective. On top of this, it is easy to navigate and find where you can buy the DVD. One weakness is that It doesn't show the stars clearly on the website, but other than that it has great brand cohesion and clear social media links.
Gravity

This website is very sleek, suiting the sci-fi/ thriller genre and clearly shows codes and conventions with the
title, the
stars and a
review, all major
hooks for the film. It has
tickets links and a
gallery, but is hard to navigate, and isn't working fully. One main strength is the moving background, showing
short clips from the film and the sound affects when you hover over buttons gives the audience the mood for the film. However, you could argue that the background is too full on and it is hard to focus on anything else.
The Hobbit

This website is pretty sparse, but affective, as it doesn't need to do too much as the Hobbit trilogy is so well advertised and
iconic. The
date of release and
title are very clearly shown and the
typography gives great
brand cohesion. The website is full of
click bait with links to a
game, the
synopsis,
videos and
tickets. The website is very easy to navigate and by having the protagonist looking directly at the viewer, shows the main
star, which is a code and convention of a website. However, it could include more codes and conventions for example, free
downloads or reviews.
